Reports from the small city of Selseleh and Delfan, in the western Iranian Lorestan Province, indicate that women have been gathering in city squares in the hope of finding a temporary job
to pay for the daily expenses of their families.
This is unprecedented in the culture of Iranians for women to stand in the streets in search of jobs. Usually men who do not have a permanent job wait in some city squares to be picked up by some employer and earn a meager income to pay for daily expenses.
Widespread poverty, economic bankruptcy and shutdown of factories, however, have forced women to undertake such an unusual step to earn a dignified living.
