Varisha Moradi, a political prisoner sentenced to death and currently held in Evin Prison, is being denied access to essential medical treatment despite her deteriorating health.
Suffering from severe spinal and cervical disc issues, Varisha Moradi urgently requires surgery and specialized medical care, as confirmed by medical experts. However, prison authorities at Evin have repeatedly refused to transfer her to an external medical facility, ignoring professional medical advice and the severity of her condition.
This is not the first time Varisha Moradi has been deprived of necessary medical attention. Her repeated denial of healthcare reflects a broader pattern of systematic neglect towards political prisoners in Iran.
Arrest and Death Sentence
Varisha Moradi was arrested by Iranian regime’s security forces in August 2023 in the outskirts of Sanandaj. After months of interrogation at the Ministry of Intelligence detention center, known as Ward 209 of Evin Prison, she was transferred to the women’s ward of the prison on December 26, 2023.
In November 2024, Branch 15 of Tehran’s Revolutionary Court sentenced her to death on charges of “baghy-e” (armed rebellion against the state).
Additional Legal Charges
In addition to the death sentence, Moradi was convicted in another case in October 2023, along with four other prisoners, by the Criminal Court 2 of Qods Judicial Complex in Tehran. She was sentenced to six months in prison on charges of “assaulting an officer and resisting arrest.”
This case stemmed from protests by female prisoners in Evin following the execution of Reza Rasaei on August 7, 2023, during which prison guards violently suppressed the detainees.
As concerns mount over Moradi’s critical health condition, reports continue to highlight the Iranian regime’s systematic use of medical neglect as a tool of oppression against political prisoners.
