Nahid Shaqaqi summoned to serve her sentence of 2 years and 3 months

in Women's News

Nahid Shaqaqi, a women’s rights activist, received a written summons from the Implementation of Verdicts’ Office in Tehran to serve a two-year and three-month imprisonment sentence.

On Sunday, June 11, 2023, Nahid Shaqaqi, a women’s rights activist and a member of the Voice of Iranian Women Association (Neda-ye Zanan-e Iran), received a summons from the First Branch of the Implementation of Verdicts Office of the 33rd Prosecutor’s Office in Tehran. She was called to serve a two-year and three-month imprisonment sentence.

The Tehran Revolutionary Court had previously sentenced Nahid Shaqaqi to the same term of imprisonment. She is required to appear at the mentioned court within 10 days from the date the summons was issued, i.e., June 11, 2023.

Nahid Shaqaqi announced, “Despite the order of the Forensics Medicine Organization, indicating a lack of ability to endure imprisonment, my guarantors received a notification on June 12, 2023, that the bail would be confiscated and his bank account was immediately blocked.”

Women’s rights activist Nahid Shaqaqi was arrested at home on Wednesday, May 15, 2019. Security forces broke into her house, brutalized Nahid Shaqaqi, and took her away.

Following the search of her residence and confiscation of some personal belongings, she was subsequently transferred to the Intelligence Ministry Ward 209 of Evin Prison. After going through the stages of interrogation and being informed of the charges against her, she was released on bail on June 22, 2019.

On December 4, 2019, Nahid Shaqaqi was prosecuted by Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court on charges of “forming the Voice of Iranian Women Association with the intention of overthrowing the regime,” “conspiracy and collusion against national security,” “propaganda against the state,” and “committing an unlawful act by removing the hijab.”

On December 10, 2019, she was acquitted of some of the charges but was sentenced to four years and two months of imprisonment for the remaining charges of “conspiracy and collusion,” “propaganda against the state,” and “committing an unlawful act by removing the hijab.”

The final enforceable verdict for Nahid Shaqaqi was reduced to two years and three months of imprisonment.

ABOUT US

NCRI Women Committee

We work extensively with Iranian women outside the country and maintain a permanent contact with women inside Iran. The Women’s Committee is actively involved with many women’s rights organizations and NGO’s and the Iranian diaspora.
The committee is a major source of much of the information received from inside Iran with regards to women. Attending UN Human Rights Council meetings and other international or regional conferences on women’s issues and engaging in a relentless battle against the Iranian regime’s misogyny are part of the activities of members and associates of the committee.
