Political prisoner Nejat Anvar Hamidi faces an additional 15 years in prison after a new case filed against her by the Intelligence Ministry. The new file does not contain any new charges compared to her first case for which she is serving 5 years.
Nejat Anvar Hamidi and her husband have been recently sentenced to another 15 years in prison, each. They are charged with membership in the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran and disseminating propaganda against the state by Branch 4 of the Justice Department of Ahvaz. These charges are the same ones included in the first file against her.
In her defense, Ms. Anvar Hamidi reiterated to the court that the new file contains no new charges against her. The verdict has been forwarded to the Supreme Court several months ago.
Nejat Anvar Hamidi, 62, suffers from thyroid malfunction, vision complications and chronic headaches. In April 2020, she was among 50 inmates in the Sepidar Prison of Ahvaz who contracted the coronavirus.
Ms. Anvar Hamidi has been on the waiting list to be visited by doctor over the past year. But prison authorities have told her and other prisoners that doctors visit only emergency cases and those who have irremediable illnesses. On the orders of the Intelligence Department of Ahvaz, she has been deprived of receiving medical leave.
Political prisoner Nejat Anvar Hamidi is one of the supporters of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK). She was first arrested in 1981. Ms. Anvar Hamidi spent 2 years and 4 months in prison under vicious pressures for supporting the PMOI.
She was arrested once again in 2017, for supporting the PMOI. She was temporarily released on a heavy bail until determination of her sentence.
In March 2018, Nejat Anvar Hamidi was called and transferred to the Sepidar Prison of Ahvaz to serve her 5-year sentence on charges of “membership in opposition internet groups” and “propaganda against the state.” Since then, she has been in jail.
