Mina, a 14-year-old girl from the city of Mashhad (northeast), will be sent to prison on charges of involuntary manslaughter of her classmate.
In March 2014, Mina was involved in an incident when one of her classmates was sitting on a bench in their school courtyard. Mina ran, jumped and hit her classmate’s side, causing major internal bleeding and eventually leading to the death of her classmate, the state-run Fars news agency reported. Mina’s father, a bus driver for the city, has only been able to gather 60 million of the 570 million rials blood-money needed to save his daughter from going to prison (around $1,750 of the required $16,500).
Currently 8,100 prisoners are in Iran’s prisons on involuntary charges and a total of 6.5 trillion rials (around $188 million) are needed for their bail.
