Motahareh Gouneii, a suspended student of Tehran University of Medical Sciences, has been sentenced to one year in prison by the 29th branch of the Tehran Revolutionary Court.
The verdict found her guilty of “spreading propaganda against the state for the benefit of anti-revolutionary media.” Her offense? Protesting the death sentence of detained Iranian rapper and protester Tomaj Salehi, along with her other writings. However, she was acquitted of the charge of “insulting the leadership and disrupting public order.”
Background Information
Motahareh Gouneii was arrested by the forces of the IRGC intelligence department in Tehran on May 1, after being summoned, and was taken to Tehran’s notorious Evin prison. Fortunately, a few days later, on May 5, she was released from Evin prison after posting bail.
Before this incident, Motahareh Gouneii and her husband, Mehdi Hadizadeh, both students of Tehran University of Medical Sciences, faced additional consequences. The central committee of the Ministry of Health temporarily suspended them from the university and forced them to transfer to Ardabil University of Medical Sciences.
Motahareh Gouneii, a dentistry student and former political secretary of the Islamic Association of Tehran University, had previously been arrested by security forces in Tehran in connection with the nationwide protests of 2022.
