Iran: Disciplinary Actions Taken Against Student Activists

May 15, 2023
in Women's News

In recent disciplinary actions at universities across Iran, several students have faced severe penalties for their alleged involvement in activities leading to expulsion or academic suspension. Here are the details of the cases:

Motahareh Gouneii Expelled and Banned for Five Years

Motahareh Gouneii, a dentistry student and the political secretary of the Students Association at Tehran University and its School of Medical Sciences, has been expelled from the university and prohibited from studying at any institution for the next five years.

The decision was made by the Disciplinary Council based on allegations of creating chaos and unrest within the university.

Gouneii was also among the detainees of the nationwide 2022-2023 Iran protests.

Fatemeh Sadrifar Receives Academic Suspension and Change of Study Location

Fatemeh Sadrifar, a dentistry student at Qom University of Medical Sciences, has been sentenced by the university’s Disciplinary Review Council. She has been suspended from academic activities for four terms and will be required to change her study location.

This decision follows her previous unjust expulsion by the Preliminary Disciplinary Council for participating in a one-day strike.

Sepideh Rashno Banned from Al-Zahra University

Sepideh Rashno has been banned from studying at Al-Zahra University for a period of two terms. The decision was made by the Disciplinary Committee, citing her failure to observe the compulsory Hijab in university environments.

According to Rashno, she has been prohibited from entering the university since March 2023, and the oral communication of the Disciplinary Committee’s verdict further confirms her exclusion.

ABOUT US

NCRI Women Committee

We work extensively with Iranian women outside the country and maintain a permanent contact with women inside Iran. The Women’s Committee is actively involved with many women’s rights organizations and NGO’s and the Iranian diaspora.
The committee is a major source of much of the information received from inside Iran with regards to women. Attending UN Human Rights Council meetings and other international or regional conferences on women’s issues and engaging in a relentless battle against the Iranian regime’s misogyny are part of the activities of members and associates of the committee.
