The Iranian regime’s Supreme Court has upheld the death sentence for Arghavan Fallahi, a 25-year-old political prisoner and supporter of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK).
This sentence was originally issued on July 1 of this year by Branch 15 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court under Judge Abolqasem Salavati on charges of “rebellion” (Baghi) and communicated via her attorney. With its confirmation by the highest judicial authority, the risk of her execution is now imminent.
The confirmation of the death sentence for Arghavan Fallahi comes despite an international wave of protests and condemnations in recent weeks. Over 4,000 prominent political, legal, and social figures from 62 countries across five continents signed a joint statement expressing their explicit opposition to the death sentence for Arghavan Fallahi. Among the signatories are 172 prominent political personalities, including European and national parliamentarians, former cabinet ministers, and local elected officials.
Signatories emphasized that no individual should be sentenced to death for holding or expressing opposing political views, urging the international community to take immediate action to stop the execution of the death sentence for Arghavan Fallahi and other political prisoners. Nonetheless, the Iranian judiciary, disregarding international human rights appeals and documented violations of due process, upheld the verdict without modification.
Arghavan Fallahi was first arrested on November 4, 2022, along with her father and brother in Shiraz. After enduring one year and four months in prison, she was released on bail in March 2024. She was re-arrested on January 25, 2025, in the city of Parand and transferred to Ward 241 of Evin Prison. She spent approximately five months in solitary confinement under intensive interrogation, facing physical and psychological torture. Following the bombardment and evacuation of Evin Prison, she was transferred to solitary confinement in Fashafouyeh Prison (Greater Tehran Penitentiary) and is currently incarcerated in the women’s ward of Evin Prison.
The NCRI Women’s Committee calls on the United Nations, relevant international organizations, and human rights bodies to take urgent action to save the life of Arghavan Fallahi and other prisoners on death row. The NCRI Women’s Committee reiterates its call for an international fact-finding mission to visit Iranian prisons and meet with political prisoners.
