In an interview with the state-run ISNA news agency on 18 April, Majid Abhari, a member of the Beheshti Medical College Board of Science stated that the age of divorced women in Iran has now reached 16.
“Currently, for each six marriages one ends in a divorce, and in Tehran alone, for every four marriages one ends in a divorce,” he said.
The official admitted that inflation, unemployment and
high prices of daily goods are the reason behind an increase in divorce rates.
“Due to a negative cultural interpretation of marrying widowed women, these women are forced to give into second marriages with wedded men, or enter unofficial marriages,” he added.
Of course, the regime’s officials do not mention the fact that misogynist laws, including laws allowing girls to wed at the age of 9, or even at a lower age in some cases, are the main reasons behind this tragedy. The latest statistics published by this regime’s Statistics Center reveal a glimpse of the truth. According to these figures from March 2013 to March 2014, a total of 41,439 girls under the age of 15, and 234,974 girls between the ages of 15 to 19 had entered marriages. Furthermore, 9,179 girls were forced to marry men who were more than 20 years older.
