Security forces in Tehran prevented ceremonies commemorating Somayeh Mehri, a victim of acid attacks who passed away on 14 April, from being held. In a show of respect, a number of women’s activists intended to place flowers and light candles outside the hospital where she died. However, they were faced with interference by security forces who dispersed the crowd.
Following these measures a number of the activists gathered at a small park near the hospital where they lit candles, placed flowers and pictures of Somayeh and her daughter Rana, who is also a victim of this vicious acid attack, in her memory. Regime officials, fearing that such gatherings would turn into a widespread protest, rushed to the scene dispatching their motorcycle agents to disperse the crowd, and they even confiscated their candles.
Somayeh Mehri, and her daughter Rana, were attacked with acid by her husband in 2011. Somayeh lost her life after suffering from an illness and being hospitalized for two days due to the fact that her lungs were no longer functioning from the acid wounds. She passed away while her two daughters are now left without a caretaker.
