On Saturday, February 14, a group of students at Tehran University of Medical Sciences staged a sit-in to protest the escalating wave of arrests targeting university and high school students in connection with the recent nationwide protests. The Tehran Medical Students boycotted their examinations as part of the action.
Participants gathered on campus and issued a formal statement condemning the detentions and expressing solidarity with those currently in custody. During the sit-in, the names of several imprisoned students were read aloud by attendees.
One student addressing the gathering underscored the medical community’s social responsibility: “We, the medical students at Tehran University, have assembled here today to be the voice of our imprisoned classmates, the voice of students and schoolchildren, some of whom now face the threat of execution. As future physicians and as part of Iran’s human capital, we consider it our duty to pursue their rights and demands. Our call is for the immediate release of all these individuals.”
The sit-in forms part of a broader wave of student-led protests in response to the widespread arrests that followed the recent nationwide protests.
