Marina Raskova was a pioneering Soviet aviator and navigator, best known for founding the world’s first all-female air regiments during World War II. Born in 1912, Raskova became a celebrated pilot and earned the nickname “The Russian Amelia Earhart” for her groundbreaking achievements in aviation.
As a skilled navigator, Raskova set multiple long-distance flight records before the war. Her most historic contribution came during WWII when she used her influence to create three all-female air units: the 586th Fighter Aviation Regiment, the 587th Bomber Aviation Regiment, and the 588th Night Bomber Regiment, famously known as the “Night Witches.” These regiments played a vital role in the Soviet air force, breaking gender barriers and proving women’s capabilities in combat roles.

Marina Raskova’s legacy as a trailblazer and military hero continues to inspire aviators and feminists worldwide. She died in 1943 during a combat mission but remains an iconic figure in Soviet and aviation history.
