More than a month has passed since the arrest of Marzieh Ghafarizadeh, a Tehran resident, and she remains in legal limbo at Evin Prison.
Marzieh Ghafarizadeh was arrested on February 1, 2025, by security forces and transferred to Ward 1-A of Evin Prison, the IRGC Intelligence Detention Center. After undergoing interrogation, she was moved to the women’s ward of Evin Prison on February 18.
Despite a bail order being issued for her release, the case officer has refused to accept it. Meanwhile, she is battling cancer and undergoing treatment, and the harsh prison conditions could seriously deteriorate her health.
No official information has been released regarding the charges against her or the reasons for her arrest.
Marzieh Ghafarizadeh, a former political prisoner from the 1980s, has volunteered in southern Tehran for over 25 years. She was an active member of the 13th Aban Cultural Association, working to support pregnant and nursing mothers and children in marginalized communities.
As a cancer patient, she requires urgent medical care that cannot be adequately provided in prison. Her case highlights the broader issue of the inhumane treatment of political prisoners, particularly women, in Iran.
The fate of Marzieh Ghafarizadeh is not just a personal tragedy but a stark reminder of the ongoing repression of human rights defenders in Iran.
