Breaking the Chains: Iranian Women’s Fight for Freedom
Hello, and welcome to the NCRI Women’s Committee Podcast, where we explore the struggles and triumphs of women in Iran. With International Women’s Day just two weeks away, today, we salute the incredible women worldwide who have fought and paved the way for women’s rights and equality.
That’s right! And today, we’re diving into the fierce and relentless battle of Iranian women. They’ve been at the forefront of the fight for freedom and democracy in Iran, and their courage is nothing short of inspiring.
Absolutely. When we think of Iran, unfortunately, the image that often comes to mind is one of oppression—particularly the suppression of women’s rights. Women in Iran have had their basic freedoms taken away, whether it’s the right to choose their attire, participate fully in society, or live without fear of violence.
It’s so important to recognize that the repression in Iran isn’t just about the compulsory hijab. It goes far deeper. The regime’s control over women is a tool to maintain its power, and it’s been that way for over 40 years. But what we don’t hear enough about is the other side of this story: the fierce resistance of Iranian women.
Exactly. From day one of the mullahs’ rule, Iranian women have been standing up, pushing back against this tyranny. And it’s not just about fighting for the right to wear what they want. It’s about fighting to overthrow a regime that has subjugated their entire society for over four decades.
And this struggle didn’t start yesterday. It has been evolving for over 150 years, with women actively participating in Iran’s political and social struggles. For the past 43 years, they have been fighting this regime, paying the price with arrests, imprisonment, torture, and executions. Today, Iranian women’s struggle has reached a new level of maturity. For more than 30 years, they have been at the helm of the organized opposition, leading the charge to overthrow the regime and inspiring women in Iran to take on their roles and responsibilities.
That’s a huge point. After years of social activism, which led to widespread arrests, imprisonment, and torture, Iranian women have proven their strength and resilience. In 1985, Maryam Rajavi became the first woman to lead the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran, breaking a significant barrier and showing the world that women can—and must—lead in the fight for democracy.
And that leadership didn’t just stop with her. Maryam Rajavi opened the door for other women within the PMOI. Today, women hold leadership roles across every part of the organization: political, military, economic, and social.
That’s right, and it’s important to note that Maryam Rajavi’s belief is clear: true equality for women comes when they are not just participants but leaders in the political sphere. Women are not just fighting for their own rights—they’re fighting for the future of their entire country.
And they’ve paid a heavy price and they continue to do so. Tens of thousands of women have been tortured or executed by the regime. Despite that, these women continue to stand tall, leading protests, organizing resistance units inside Iran, and showing the world their courage. They’ve become the face of the revolution in Iran.
It’s incredible to think about how far this struggle has come. Just look at the 2022 uprising sparked by the tragic murder of Zhina Amini. Women were not just a part of it—they were at the forefront, leading the charge, and they inspired people all over the world.
These women have shown that the fight for democracy, freedom, and equality isn’t just about the right to choose your clothes. It’s about overthrowing a regime that thrives on repression and violence.
And this fight isn’t over. The mullahs’ regime continues to target women, trying to stifle their resistance. But women in Iran are fighting back, and they won’t stop until the regime is overthrown.
Absolutely. The message from Iranian women is clear: no matter the obstacles, no matter the price, they will continue to resist. They are determined to break free from the chains of oppression and bring about a new era of freedom and equality for all Iranians.
And we stand with them. As we approach International Women’s Day, let’s remember the strength, resilience, and leadership of these women. They are not just fighting for themselves—they are fighting for everyone.
That’s right. Women, Resistance, Freedom. This is the battle cry that will echo through history. And as we witness these brave women leading the charge, we can only say: We can, and we must, stand with them in their fight for a free, democratic Iran.
