Atefeh Rangriz, a women’s rights activist from Damghan, a city in north-central Iran, has been sentenced to seven years and seven months of imprisonment, along with a two-year ban on online activities. Currently, she is on medical leave from Shahrud Central Prison, located in Semnan Province, due to deteriorating health.
Damghan’s Revolutionary Court recently issued a verdict against Atefeh Rangriz, sentencing her to seven years in prison for “forming a Telegram group (referred to as Gago’s Translation)” and an additional seven months for “propaganda against the regime.” Her request to extend medical leave for a CT angiography was denied.
Ms. Rangriz was first arrested by Damghan’s Intelligence Department on September 10, 2023. She was initially held at their detention center in Semnan before being transferred to Shahrud Central Prison. On October 21, 2023, she was released on bail.
Her latest arrest occurred on June 29, 2024, leading to her return to Shahrud Central Prison. On November 6, 2024, she was granted temporary medical leave, though her Revolutionary Court sentence was formally communicated during this period.
Atefeh Rangriz’s legal troubles extend beyond her current sentence. In an earlier case, Damghan’s Revolutionary Court sentenced her to two years, seven months, and 16 days for “collaborating with and being a member of groups opposing the regime,” and an additional seven months and 16 days for “propaganda against the regime.”
