A 26-year-old female worker gets killed in a factory in Neyshabur
A 26-year-old female worker from Neyshabur died after her scarf got caught in a plastic injection machine and pulled her in.
The young woman was a mother of two children. She was not covered by social security insurance, depriving her of her fundamental rights under the law.
The tragic death was caused by inappropriate work attire that did not comply with safety standards. The 26-year-old female worker and mother has not been identified yet.
In at least two similar incidents in recent years, two other female workers also lost their lives.
On May 8, 2022, a female worker, 40, lost her life when dragged into a confectionary machine. The incident happened in a patisserie in Babol, Mazandaran Province, northern Iran. A piece of the victim’s clothes had been stuck in the machine and pulled her in. Unfortunately, she suffocated at once and lost her life.
On November 6, 2021, Marzieh Taherian died while working with a ring-spinning machine in the Kavir Semnan Textile Factory in east-central Iran.
Marzieh Taherian was only 21 years old. Her fellow workers said her head covering was stuck in the machine, but immediately afterward, her head was also pulled in. (The state-run ILNA – November 7, 2021)
Many young women must work in the production units to help mitigate economic pressure on their families and assist their parents. They must bear the harsh work conditions at the workshops and factories. (The official IRNA news agency – May 3, 2018)
Some experts have described the intolerable conditions of female workers in production units as “new slavery.” Low wages and lack of job safety are among the problems female workers face in Iran.
Women are forced to accept any low-paying job and the harsh work conditions in small workshops, which are not monitored by the Labor Ministry and do not abide by the Labor Law. So those who work in these workshops lack legal support, benefits, insurance, and safety.
