In September 2022, the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini (Jina) in the custody of the clerical regime’s morality police sparked a wave of protests across Iran. Women and young girls stood at the forefront of the 2022 Uprising, taking to the streets with extraordinary courage to protest repression, discrimination, and dictatorship.
During the uprising, 750 people were killed by security forces, while around 30,000 were arrested and subjected to torture. Among those killed were many women and young girls whose names and faces became symbols of the courage and resistance of the Iranian people.
Today, four years after the uprising, the memory of the women and girls who lost their lives during those days remains alive. Their deaths did not mark the end of the struggle. Their blood is a memory that cannot be erased and an aspiration that cannot be silenced.
The 2022 Uprising emerged from four decades of organized struggle, led by women, against a misogynistic regime. The leading role of women in the Iranian people’s struggle has intertwined their names with resistance and freedom.
