There are 157 imprisoned women in Iran arrested for involuntary crimes, marking a two-fold increase up until August 2015, an Iranian official said.
“According to latest statistics, 79 female prisoners were registered in the country’s prisons, however unfortunately,
we have witnessed a two-fold increase in the number of prisoners up to mid-August of this year,” Assadollah Jolaie added.
“85% of the women in jail are there because of financial crimes,” he added.
The highest number of women in prison for involuntary charges are 20 female prisoners in jails in Tehran Province, 18 in Tehran and Fars and 16 Isfahan,” he said.
