From Australia to Jordan and from Berlin to Ethiopia events took place in all corners of the globe to
commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (Beijing + 20). While
there has been an immense amount of progress in the last two decades there are still many horizons which
need to be reached.
If we look at the headlines and the atrocities being committed around the world it may seem a bad time to
celebrate equality for women. But alongside the stories of extraordinary barbarism and violence lies another
reality, one where more women are in leadership positions, and where women are increasingly standing up,
speaking out and demanding action.
In September 1995, at the fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, a motto arose, “Women’s rights
are human rights”, now twenty years later, more and more this motto is turning into a reality but also serves
On 7 March 2015, an international conference was held in Berlin with the presence of tens of thousands of
people from 40 different countries to draw attention to the plight of women and the role they serve in
combating fundamentalism and promoting tolerance and equality.
The conference was addressed by Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, President-elect of the Iranian resistance as well as
prominent figures such as the former female Prime Ministers of Canada and Slovakia, who each broke
barriers in their time, to the former President of the German Bundestag, German Ministry of Justice,
Portuguese General Prosecutor, Vice-President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe from
Albania, Prominent women’s rights activist from five continents, high ranking dignitaries from Middle Eastern
and North African countries, Former U.S. Homeland Security Advisor, Former White House Director of Public
Liaison, Former presidential candidate from Colombia, Spanish Senators and Parliamentarians, Members of
the Belgium, Italian, Finish and Romanian Parliaments, Members of the European Parliament and
representatives of Iranian women’s associations.
The message of the conference was clear, Women’s power is the greatest challenger to Islamic
fundamentalism, thus, to successfully combat the threat of Islamic fundamentalism we must further the cause of gender equality.
