British-Iranian national, Ghoncheh Ghavami, who was arrested along with other women on 20 June 2014 for entering Azadi stadium during the men’s volleyball match between Iran and Italy, was released from prison on a 1 billion rial bail. Tehran prosecutor’s office has announced that the case of Ghoncheh Ghavami has been closed with a 1 billion Rial fine.
Ghavami was once released on the day of her arrest, but was re-detained by security agents ten days later, on 30 June 2014 while appearing at the detention center to collect her belongings.
Her first court hearing was held on 14 October 2014 where she was charged with “propaganda against the system” and having connections with dissidents. Thus she was condemned to one year imprisonment and a two year ban from leaving the country.
While in prison, she staged a hunger strike protesting the trend of her case in Iran’s judiciary, which drew attention to her case and lead to international protests, with many dignitaries and organizations demanding her release.
