Some 600 women were arrested on the anniversary of the 2022 uprising
A so-called committee following up on the conditions of those arrested during the protests has reported that at least 600 women have been arrested in Tehran on the anniversary of the murder of Zhina Mahsa Amini and the start of the 2022 nationwide uprising in Iran.
According to this report, 130 women are presently detained in the quarantine ward of Qarchak Prison. The authorities have filed cases against these women with the Judiciary. (The state-run Baharnews.ir, September 21, 2023)
Earlier reports indicated that 360 women who had been arrested during the protests on September 16, 2023, in Tehran had been transferred to Qarchak Prison, east of Tehran.
Detainees in Qarchak Prison held a protest on September 16. Prison guards opened fire on prisoners, wounding at least 20 of them. The protests and ensuing clashes led to a fire in this prison. Presently, the detainees in Qarchak are deprived of boiling water, food, and medicine. Many of the prisoners face new cases. A notorious judge, Mohammad Reza Amouzad, has been stationed in Qarchak to expedite the issuing of sentences for the women detained in this prison.
Continued intimidation of families of the martyrs of the 2022-2023 uprising
The clerical regime continues to intimidate, pressure, and arrest the families who lost their loved ones during the nationwide uprising last year.
The repressive security forces attacked the residence of Javad Heydari in Qazvin on Thursday, September 21, using tear gas, brutalizing even the children, and arresting the sister and two brothers of the young man who was a graduate of agriculture. He was shot to death by security forces on September 22, 2022.
The families of Nika Shakarami, Hannaneh Kia, Ghazaleh Chalabi, and Erfan Rezaii are also among those recently intimidated to cancel planned memorial ceremonies for their loved ones.
The parents and fiancée of Hannaneh Kia are presently detained. Ms. Farzaneh Barzekar, the mother of Erfan Rezaii, was arrested and detained in the Prison of Qaemshahr, since September 3.
Erfan Rezaii was 21 years old and killed by security forces in Amol, northern Iran, on September 21, 2022.
