“It is a shame for the world of Islam when a woman with improper cover goes on the stand,
then an Indian referee hangs a medal around her neck and the Iranian flag is hoisted.”
This shocking remark by Mullah Alamol-Hoda, the Friday Prayer leader of Mashhad, was made about women who participate in national and international tournaments and win medals. Critical of the presence of male referees in the championship competitions, and underlining full segregation of men and women in sports, Alamol-Hoda added, “Our highest achievement (in women’s sports) was that we presented Hijab on the international arena. With this outlook, we should now work towards eliminating even the male cameraman in the area of women’s sports.”
