Following the “Golvani Congress” in the city of Khoram Abad in western Iran, regime officials increased their protests regarding hijab conditions in Lorestan Province.
In this regard, the head of all public courts in Khoram Abad said special branches of these courts will be allocated to dealing with violators of “improper veiling”.
“Those who appear in public without proper hijab will be sentenced from 10 days to 2 months jail, or will be fined, and the cases will be dealt with in the shortest amount of time,” he stipulated.
Golvani is a type of traditional turban and a historical symbol. Such pieces of cloths are worn today as veils by women and girls in Iran’s Kurdistan and Lorestan regions. From two years ago a number of girls in Khoram Abad launched a campaign and had May 16 designated as the “Lor Headscarf Day”. Each year from spring until May 16, women wear the headscarves and inform others about it. However, after this congress in which a number of provincial officials took part in, various protests were expressed against this gathering by religious figures and Friday prayer leaders.
Administrative entities in Iran only recognize a specific type of hijab specified by the government as the sharia hijab. In this regard, even Kurdish women’s clothing which covers the entire body is considered improper hijab.
