On Saturday, November 2, 2024, Zhina Modarres Gorji was transferred to Sanandaj Prison to begin serving her prison sentence. A group of activists gathered outside the courthouse in Sanandaj as she was taken into custody.
Previously, on October 22, she had been summoned to the Fourth Branch of the Criminal Enforcement Department at the Sanandaj Prosecutor’s Office to begin her sentence.
In October, the Fourth Branch of the Kurdistan Court of Appeals sentenced Zhina to a total of 28 months in prison: 12 months for “propaganda against the regime” and 16 months for “forming an illegal group with the intent to overthrow the regime.” She was acquitted of the charge of “collaborating with a hostile government.”
According to Article 134 of the regime’s Penal Code, only the maximum sentence—16 months in prison—will be enforced.
Zhina Modarres Gorgi was initially arrested by intelligence officers on April 10, 2023, and was released on bail on July 3, 2023.
