Tayyebeh Nazari, the mother of the deceased activist lawyer, Maryam Arvin, announced that the cause of her daughter’s death was the injection of drugs in prison.
On Monday, May 29, 2023, Tayyebeh Nazari wrote on her Instagram account that her daughter, Maryam Arvin, who had been arrested for defending her clients, was killed by drugs in prison under the pretext of injecting tranquilizers and sedatives.
Tayyebeh Nazari added that the prison doctor had confirmed in a letter the injuries Ms. Arvin sustained in prison.
Tayyebeh Nazari also emphasized that one week after her daughter’s death, Branch 103 of the Criminal Court handed down a 15-month prison sentence, a fine of one million Tomans, and 40 lashes for Ms. Nazari, in absentia, which was later suspended.
Tayyebeh Nazari also addressed the violence during her daughter’s arrest and added: A female officer named Zahra Alizadeh, known as “Mobina,” along with an intelligence officer from the State Security Force named Hamid Zeydabadi, handcuffed Maryam Arvin in the corridor of the courthouse, removed her veil, and dragged her on the ground.
Tayyebeh Nazari, who teaches literature in high schools in Sirjan, was also arrested after following up on her daughter’s situation.
Maryam Arvin was detained for defending her clients
Maryam Arvin, 29, was an attorney-in-law and a member of the Lawyers Association in Kerman Province.
Ms. Arvin voluntarily pursued the cases of deprived individuals, children on welfare, and child laborers.
She was arrested in a court in Sirjan on November 26, 2022. The judge ordered her arrest because she was professionally defending her client.
Dr. Maryam Arvin counseled the families of the protesters detained in Sirjan.
On December 13, 2022, Maryam Arvin was released on bail, and the court was supposed to issue a verdict for her in the following days.
However, the Kerman Lawyers Association announced on February 7, 2023, that Maryam Arvin, an attorney-in-law, had passed away two months after her release from prison. The cause of her death was not specified in the statement.
In the past months, several detainees of the nationwide protests have suspiciously died after their release, and their deaths have been attributed to “suicide.”
The deaths of several prisoners after their release, such as Yalda Aghafazli, Arshia Imamgholi, and Mohsen Jafarirad, have raised many questions about the government’s treatment of prisoners.
