Every day, 40 prisoners do not receive food to eat
Inmates deliberately starved in the Central Prison of Urmia
The ration for food and bread for female prisoners in the Central Prison of Urmia has been cut down. More than 40 prisoners do not receive meals every day.
An informed source in the women’s ward of the Central Prison of Urmia said, “Over the past few days, the ration of dry bread has been reduced to one piece per day. In addition, because of shortage of food, every day, more than 40 inmates do receive their meals.”
Due to the lack of food, female prisoners must buy their food from the prison store.
Items in the prison store cost twice as much as it is sold outside. Every prisoner must pay more than 300,000 Tomans to get something to eat, but most prisoners do not afford to do so.
Deliberate starvation of prisoners is an example of torture. Providing food for prisoners is one of the most fundamental rights of every prisoner. Being deprived of this fundamental right undermines their right to life, as well.

Mothers in captivity
Soada Khadirzadeh is one of the prisoners jailed in the Central Prison of Urmia. She is in dire health conditions after she underwent a C-section to give birth to her baby girl. She already had problems nursing her baby due to the small amount and low quality of food in prison. Now, she faces starvation, as well.
She was returned to prison, the day she delivered her baby without being able to complete her treatment.
During the 10 hours, she was in the hospital, Ms. Khadirzadeh was deprived of having visits from her family and she could only call them once on the phone.
