More inmates showing symptoms of Covid-19 in the women’s ward of Evin

Deputy Warden of Evin: Outside is the same. You will die, too!

There are growing concerns over widespread infection with Covid-19 in the women’s ward of Evin Prison.

More recent reports from the women’s ward of Evin indicate that more inmates are showing symptoms of the Covid-19 in the women’s ward of Evin Prison.

Aliyeh Motallebazadeh, a photographer and a women’s rights activist, who is presently detained in the women’s ward of Evin, sent out an audio file on Saturday, July 17, saying that her fellow inmates are contracting the Covid-19.

At least three inmates have been transferred to the quarantine over the past four days, said Mrs. Motallebazadeh. They have been locked up in the room. No medical care is provided to them.

The NCRI Women’s Committee warned about the outbreak on July 13, 2021. The committee has registered so far the infections of Nahid Fat’halian, Zeinab Hamrang, and detained conservationist Sepideh Kashani who have tested positive.

The authorities of Evin Prison have not taken action to test all inmates to determine the ones who are positive for Covid-19.

Mrs. Motallebzadeh said in her audio file that three inmates, including Arezou Qassemi and Zahra Jamali, are in critical condition, and Mojgan Kavousi already has the Covid-19 symptoms.

She reported that inmates in the women’s ward have panicked over the news of infections and the denial of medical treatment to inmates. They are not cleaning up the ward as they did before, contributing to the unsanitary conditions in prison.

In response to Mrs. Motallebzadeh’s demand for attendance to the sick inmates in the quarantine, the deputy warden of Evin said: “Outside is the same. People are dying there. What is the difference? You will die, too.”

Since the beginning of the outbreak, the clerical regime has adopted massive casualties to fend off the threat of popular uprisings. In prisons, the authorities have not provided the minimum sanitary equipment to inmates, using the Coronavirus as a tool to further torture prisoners and killing them.

The People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran reported that as of Sunday evening, July 18, 2021, the death toll due to the Coronavirus in Iran had surpassed 332,100.

ABOUT US

NCRI Women Committee

We work extensively with Iranian women outside the country and maintain a permanent contact with women inside Iran. The Women’s Committee is actively involved with many women’s rights organizations and NGO’s and the Iranian diaspora.
The committee is a major source of much of the information received from inside Iran with regards to women. Attending UN Human Rights Council meetings and other international or regional conferences on women’s issues and engaging in a relentless battle against the Iranian regime’s misogyny are part of the activities of members and associates of the committee.
