American citizen, Sarah Shourd knows firsthand what it’s like to live in a prison cell. She spent 410 days in isolation in an Iranian prison, after she and two fellow Americans were detained while hiking along the Iranian border in 2009.
She has written a play, “The Box,” which looks at the impact of life inside four walls, and features firsthand perspectives from immigrants, children, and prisoners sentenced to life in jail. We discuss the play and the effects of solitary confinement.
“The box” is currently on the stage in San Francisco.
