One of the state-run monthly magazines in Iran cited a number of Iranian officials on some statistics on women.
Here are a few of the figures published in Khat-e Solh Monthly published at the end of January:
- “Women comprise 15 per cent of homeless people in Iran… Women make up 30 per cent of the total number of people who sleep in cardboard boxes in the streets across the country. The number of these women has reached 5,000 for the time being.” – Shahindokht Molaverdi, presidential deputy on women and family affairs
- “37 per cent of the country’s beggars are women.” – Habibollah Massoudi, vice president of the Welfare Organization in an interview with ISNA
- “54 per cent of female sex workers in Iran are afflicted with AIDs.” – Minoo Mohraz, head of the AIDs Research Center in Iran.
