In remarks that implicitly revealed but part of the deplorable condition of women’s employment in Iran, the vice-president of Tehran’s City Council Health Commission said:
“Most of the Health Commission’s employees are women but there have not been any effective measure regarding their employment and insurance.”
Addressing the 177th meeting of Tehran’s City Council, Mohammad Haghani said: “Presently, there are 374 Health Houses working under the auspices of the General Department of Health of Tehran’s Municipality, contributing to the city’s health. However, we see that not even one of the over 400 people who work in these houses, the majority of whom are women with bachelors and higher degrees, do not have a single document as proof of employment according to the law.”
Haghani said: “In some cases, these women receive their wages from private contrators of city services… Unfortunately, they do not have any job security and cannot even have maternity leaves.”
The Health Commission’s vice-president also pointed to the recent protests by these employees and their demand for attending to their problems. He said, “Without doubt, the women of our country must not engage in illegal jobs and cheap labor. Attention must be paid to their insurance.”
