Iranian women’s presence in the parliament and government is “theatrical”, said the secretary of Women’s Islamic Coalition, a pro-Khamenei entity, to back up her opposition to the formation of a women’s ministry.
Touran Vali-Morad acknowledged, “What we are basically confronting right now is that in the past 36 years and especially the past 26 years, our country has moved in the wrong direction in dealing with women’s issues.”
Vali-Morad added, “When we concurred on introducing women to managerial positions, men brought in their relatives (wives, sisters and daughters) and found out that this has benefits for them… Unfortunately, all what is done for women has been summarized in gatherings and meetings and we have in fact moved in the wrong direction. Women’s theatrical presence in the parliament and government have not solved any of the problems.”
