Sara Tabrizi, 20, found dead in suspicious circumstances

The body of a young woman was discovered on March 24, 2024, at her residence in Tehran. Identified as Sara Tabrizi, aged 20, she was laid to rest in Eskaman Township, Tehran Province, on March 25.

The circumstances surrounding Sara Tabrizi’s death are regarded as suspicious.

According to the preliminary report from the Coroner’s Office, she had ingested pills in an apparent suicide. The report was delivered to the Tabrizi family in the presence of security forces.

Sara Tabrizi had been enduring pressure from security forces and interrogators for months, urging her to cooperate with intelligence services.

Her ordeal began on November 16, 2023, when she was apprehended at an airport while departing Iran for the UK with her aunt. She was then transferred to Ward 209 of Evin Prison, under the jurisdiction of the Intelligence Ministry. After three days in solitary confinement, during which she suffered heart palpitations and high blood pressure due to the stress of isolation, she was moved to the infirmary and subsequently transferred to a cell for three. Following the conclusion of her interrogations after ten days, she was released on bail amounting to one billion tomans.

Even after her release, Sara Tabrizi continued to face threats from her interrogator, warning her of imprisonment in solitary confinement and the potential publication of her mobile phone’s contents if she did not cooperate with security forces.

On January 8, 2023, she was summoned and subjected to several hours of interrogation before being taken to the women’s ward of Evin Prison. After a few days, she was temporarily released on a bail of two billion tomans.

Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court sentenced Sara Tabrizi to suspended prison time on charges of “insulting the mullahs’ leader Ali Khamenei and using forged documents and a passport that belonged to someone else.”

The relentless harassment and mistreatment of Iranian youth by the Iranian regime are utterly deplorable and must be condemned in the strongest terms. The tragic case of Sara Tabrizi serves as a stark reminder of the oppressive tactics employed by the mullah regime and its repressive forces against young individuals who dare to speak up and demand justice and human rights.

ABOUT US

NCRI Women Committee

We work extensively with Iranian women outside the country and maintain a permanent contact with women inside Iran. The Women’s Committee is actively involved with many women’s rights organizations and NGO’s and the Iranian diaspora.
The committee is a major source of much of the information received from inside Iran with regards to women. Attending UN Human Rights Council meetings and other international or regional conferences on women’s issues and engaging in a relentless battle against the Iranian regime’s misogyny are part of the activities of members and associates of the committee.
