Women's Sports Clubs Sealed amid the Unemployment Crisis in Iran

Women’s Sports Clubs Sealed amid the Unemployment Crisis in Iran

August 5, 2026
in Articles

Four women’s sports clubs in the city of Yazd have been sealed off by the Public Places Supervision Police. This repressive measure comes at a time when the shutdown of women-led businesses, intertwined with a deepening unemployment crisis, has placed a double burden on women’s livelihoods. Authorities have so far provided no clear details regarding the exact reason for this action.

According to a report by the state-run Mehr News Agency on August 1, 2026, the head of Yazd Province’s Public Places Police announced that these four women’s sports clubs were sealed due to what was described as “disciplinary violations,” and legal cases have been filed against their managers.

This vague label is a well-known tactic of the repressive apparatus to find pretexts against women’s independent activities and to forcibly impose a state-mandated lifestyle. In fact, a significant portion of such crackdowns is carried out under the guise of “failure to comply with mandatory hijab,” and fabricated charges such as “violating norms,” “acts against chastity,” and “non-compliance with Islamic codes.”

Simultaneous Assault on Cyberspace and Women-Led Businesses

These aggressive measures come as official statistics and incoming reports reveal a simultaneous assault on the livelihoods, public presence, and employment opportunities of educated women across the country.

  • Summons and Online Shutdowns: Under these same repressive policies, dozens of popular women-led business pages on social media, ranging from female sports trainers and fashion/beauty influencers to hairdressers and content creators, have been blocked, or their administrators forced by FATA (Cyber Police) and the State Security Force Intelligence to sign mandatory pledge forms.
  • Seizure of Business and Urban Spaces: The sealing of dozens of cafes and businesses under the pretext of women’s violation of the compulsory dress code, and even the removal of benches and public seating areas in parts of the capital, reflect the regime’s efforts to further restrict women’s social breathing space and erase them from the public sphere.

Structural Discrimination and Women’s Unemployment

The crackdown on women comes as society struggles with a profound economic crisis, with women bearing the main burden of structural discrimination and unemployment. According to official labor market statistics published for the spring of 2026:

  • Forced Exit from the Labor Force: With a decrease of 450,000 employed individuals and a drop in the economic participation rate, a wave of despair has driven a vast segment of women and young people to effectively stop searching for work, adding to the statistics of hidden unemployment.
  • Pressure on Educated Women: While university graduates account for more than a third of the country’s unemployed (35.6%), the unemployment rate for educated women is significantly higher than that of men. They are the primary victims of economic stagnation and the regime’s discriminatory hiring policies.
  • Blocking the Future of Young Women: The youth unemployment rate reaching 23.4% shows that young women not only face closed doors in the job market after graduation, but their spaces for social breathing and activities in any women’s sports club are also shut down by the repressive apparatus.

Prioritizing Repression over Tackling the Root Causes of the Crises

The closure and sealing of women-led businesses, alongside the shutdown of any women’s sports club, further strain family livelihoods amid a rising wave of unemployment and fuel deep public discontent.

Meanwhile, the clerical regime has no real or effective solution to address economic crises, particularly the unemployment crisis, and its inability to govern society becomes clearer by the day. In this situation, rather than addressing the root causes of these crises and supporting employment, the regime has resorted solely to tightening restrictions, intensifying repression, and enforcing security controls—a policy designed primarily to contain public anger and prevent an explosion of societal discontent.

ABOUT US

NCRI Women Committee

We work extensively with Iranian women outside the country and maintain a permanent contact with women inside Iran. The Women’s Committee is actively involved with many women’s rights organizations and NGO’s and the Iranian diaspora.
The committee is a major source of much of the information received from inside Iran with regards to women. Attending UN Human Rights Council meetings and other international or regional conferences on women’s issues and engaging in a relentless battle against the Iranian regime’s misogyny are part of the activities of members and associates of the committee.
