Maria Ghavasieh was born on August 1, 2001, in Shiraz, a historic city in southern Iran. As the only child in her family, Maria’s early years were marked by both love and profound loss.
At just four years old, she lost her father in a tragic car accident. Then, when she was twelve, her mother passed away after a struggle with cancer. These hardships could have broken her spirit, but Maria persevered, focusing on her studies with resilience and determination, intent on building a future for herself despite the many obstacles.
Maria Ghavasieh was known for her joyful, energetic personality and her hopeful outlook on life. Friends remember her as a young woman full of life, whose strength was a source of inspiration for others. In 2019, at just 18, she joined the nationwide protests that erupted in November, standing up for the future she longed for—a life of freedom and justice. Although she was arrested during these protests, she refused to let fear silence her voice.
When a new wave of protests broke out in 2022, Maria Ghavasieh, then 21, was among the countless young women who again took to the streets, determined to make a difference. On November 5, 2022, during a protest in Shiraz, the demonstration Maria was part of was violently attacked by security forces. She was arrested and taken to Adelabad Prison in Shiraz, where her bravery met with unimaginable cruelty. Subjected to severe beatings, torture, and assault, Maria endured unbearable abuse. Within two or three days, she succumbed to her injuries while in custody, under the regime’s brutal treatment.
To cover up the truth, security forces falsely claimed that Maria Ghavasieh had taken her own life in prison. Her body was buried in an undisclosed location, leaving her family and friends without the solace of a proper farewell.
