Nasrin Javadi, an elderly political prisoner suffering from several diseases, who is serving her sentence in Tehran’s notorious Evin prison has been denied proper medical care.
A source close to the family of Nasrin Javadi said: “Mrs. Javadi, who is 67 years old suffers from several diseases, including severe osteoporosis. Due to lack of calcium absorption, she needs specialized treatment and injection of osteoporosis drugs. Despite the serious need for specialized medical treatment, she is still deprived of being sent to the hospital.”
Despite her age and the fact that she suffers from various other ailments such as lumbar disc, low white blood cells and severe hearing loss, Mrs. Javadi’s request for medical leave has not been approved, which has led to concerns from her family.
Although the injection of Mrs. Javadi’s osteoporosis drugs should be carried out in the hospital under the supervision of a specialist, due to the failures of the prison authorities, it is carried out on a yearly basis in the prison’s infirmary.
Nasrin Javadi, also known as Azam Khezri Javadi was arrested on May 1, 2019, on International Worker’s Day, along with dozens of others who took part in a protest rally outside the parliament, and was released from Qarchak prison on May 29, on a bail of 100 million tomans.
In July 2019, the labor activist was sentenced to five years of prison by Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court for “Assembly and collusion to act against the security of the state”, one year of prison for “spreading propaganda against the state” and another year of prison and 74 lashes for “disrupting public order.” She was also banned from using a smartphone and membership in political and social parties and groups.
In early May 2020, the Court of Appeal removed the two charges of “spreading propaganda against the state” and “disrupting public order”, and Mrs. Javadi was finally sentenced to five years for “assembly and collusion to act against the security of the country.”
Nasrin Javadi went to Evin prison on July 2, 2022, to serve her sentence.
