Aylar Haghi, a young and brave girl from Tabriz who gave her life for freedom

Aylar Haghi was born in 1999 in Malekan, northwestern Iran. In 2018, she started studying at the Tabriz Azad University of Medical Sciences.

Aylar was a happy, energetic girl full of passion and love for life.

Security forces killed her on November 16, 2022, during the uprising in Tabriz.

A November 16 social media video showed Aylar Haghi as the sole female protester among the crowds and for this reason, she was immediately identified by security forces. Security forces shot her in the back of the head with a pellet gun.

Aylar was found in critical condition in a building and was taken to the hospital, but unfortunately, the doctors could not do anything to keep her alive.

Security forces pressured Aylar’s family before handing over their daughter’s body for burial. They ordered Aylar Haghi’s family to sign a paper and declare the cause of her death as a “fall from height”, and pressured her father to make false confessions.

The head of the East Azerbaijan Provincial Intelligence Police falsely claimed that Aylar died when she “accidentally fell into the excavation site next to Shahran Tower in Tabriz”.

On Friday, November 18, 2022, a large crowd of people took part in Aylar’s funeral in the Vadi Rahmat cemetery in Tabriz.

Security forces only allowed her mother to hug her daughter’s body for a few moments. The people and youth of Tabriz chanted “We are all Aylar! Fight and we will fight back.” They were attacked by security forces on motorcycles and brutally beaten with batons.

Aylar Haghi is a role model of bravery for the youth of Tabriz. May her memory be cherished.

ABOUT US

NCRI Women Committee

We work extensively with Iranian women outside the country and maintain a permanent contact with women inside Iran. The Women’s Committee is actively involved with many women’s rights organizations and NGO’s and the Iranian diaspora.
The committee is a major source of much of the information received from inside Iran with regards to women. Attending UN Human Rights Council meetings and other international or regional conferences on women’s issues and engaging in a relentless battle against the Iranian regime’s misogyny are part of the activities of members and associates of the committee.
