The Innocent Child Whose Life Was Taken in the Struggle for Freedom
Mona Naghib, an 8-year-old girl from Saravan, a city in the southeastern province of Sistan and Baluchestan, was one of the innocent victims of the nationwide protests in 2022. This tragic event unfolded in Aspich, a district near Saravan, where Mona was fatally shot.
Her death occurred on either October 23 or 24, 2022. On that day, Mona Naghib and her older sister, Maryam, were on their way to school. It is reported that agents from Saravan’s Intelligence Department, in pursuit of two young Baloch men, opened fire, and Mona Naghib was caught in the crossfire.
Maryam, Mona’s sister, recalls the devastating moment: “Suddenly, I felt Mona’s hand slip from mine, and she fell. I asked her why she had fallen, and she said, ‘They shot me…’ I carried her on my back for part of the way but got tired. I put her down for a moment, then carried her again. A man came, and I asked if he had a phone, but he didn’t. I asked another person, and he did. I called my father and said, ‘Come quickly. They shot my sister.'”
According to news reports, following the incident, Saravan’s Intelligence agents summoned Mona’s father, Morad, and threatened him to remain silent.
