It is with profound sorrow that we acknowledge the passing of Michèle Rivasi, a departure that has left an exceptional void in our hearts and minds.
On November 22, 2023, Michèle Rivasi delivered an impassioned speech at the European Parliament, resonating with a message filled with hope and solidarity.
Her powerful words championed the cause of freedom for Iran, standing in unity with Maryam Rajavi and uplifting the brave women and girls of the nation. Michèle Rivasi spoke with a conviction that defined her lifelong commitment to championing justice and freedom.
Rivasi’s message of hope was a beacon for those seeking change, especially in Iran, where the struggle for human rights and freedom has been ongoing. Addressing Maryam Rajavi, she expressed her deep admiration for the unwavering courage displayed by the women and girls of Iran in their pursuit of freedom. She acknowledged the challenges they faced and conveyed her heartfelt solidarity with their cause.
Michèle Rivasi had a multifaceted career in politics, activism, and advocacy, marked by her dedication to environmental causes and public service.
Starting in 1986, she founded the Commission for Independent Research and Information on Radioactivity following the Chernobyl disaster. Her political journey began in France’s National Assembly from 1997 to 2002, representing the Drôme’s 1st constituency. Initially an independent ecologist aligned with PS, she later joined Europe Écologie–The Greens.
Rivasi held various significant roles, including leading the Europe Écologie list in the South-East constituency for the 2009 European elections. Her tenure in the European Parliament (2009–2023) involved serving on committees like Industry, Research, and Energy, Environment, Public Health, and Food Safety. She notably contributed as rapporteur on health crisis coordination and participated in crucial committees like Development and Budgetary Control. Rivasi was also involved in digitization and served in the ACP–EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly.
Rivasi’s activism extended beyond traditional politics; in 2019, she and three other Green MEPs were arrested for protesting against U.S. nuclear weapons in Europe. Her unwavering strength, dedication, and relentless commitment to advocating for change were a testament to her character.
Tragically, Michèle Rivasi passed away from a heart attack in Brussels on November 29, 2023, at the age of 70, leaving behind a legacy of environmental advocacy and dedication to public service.
