The UN General Assembly adopted the United Nations’ 66th resolution calling on the Iranian regime to end its ongoing human rights violations.
Wednesday, December 18, 2019, the UN General Assembly adopted the resolution on Iran with 81 favorable votes. The UN General Assembly urged the Iranian regime to release persons detained only for taking part in peaceful protests or the exercise of their human rights and fundamental freedoms.
Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, the President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran, welcomed the 66th UN resolution and urged the highest world authority to “take effective measures to stop the escalating trend of human rights abuses and the continuous crimes against humanity by the clerical regime.”
She once again stressed, “The massacre of more than 1,500 people and youth, the wounding of 4,000 more and the arrest of 12,000 during the nationwide uprising in November is one of the most horrific crimes in the 21st century and by any measure amounts to crime against humanity.”
Mrs. Rajavi reiterated the need for the formation of a fact-finding mission by the UN to investigate the November massacre and to travel to Iran to visit the prisons and those arrested.
Alarmingly high frequency of the practice of the death penalty
The UN General Assembly resolution expressed serious concern “at the alarmingly high frequency of the imposition and carrying-out of the death penalty” in Iran,” “at the continued imposition of the death penalty… against minors” and against individuals based on “forced confessions” in violation of the international law.
The resolution also called on the Iranian “to ensure, in law and in practice, that no one is subjected to torture or other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.”
Article 17 of the resolution strongly urged the Iranian regime “to eliminate, in law and in practice, all forms of discrimination and other human rights violations against women and girls, to take measures to ensure protection for women and girls against violence and their equal protection and access to justice, to address the concerning incidence of child, early and forced marriage, as recommended by the Committee on the Rights of the Child, to promote, support and enable women’s participation in political and other decision-making processes, and, while recognizing the high enrolment of women in all levels of education in the Islamic Republic of Iran, to lift restrictions on women’s equal access to all aspects of education and women’s equal participation in the labour market and in all aspects of economic, cultural, social and political life, including participation in and attendance at sporting events.”
In Article 18, the resolution calls upon the Iranian regime “to release women human rights defenders imprisoned for exercising their rights, including the right to freedom of association and peaceful assembly and the right to freedom of expression and opinion, and to take appropriate, robust and practical steps to protect women human rights defenders and guarantee their full enjoyment of all their human rights.”
The clerical regime has executed at least 100 women since 2013 during Hassan Rouhani’s tenure as its president.
