Infant mortality rate in Iran is five times the developed countries, said Ali Akbar Sayyari, deputy Minister of Health.
Sayyari said, “Every year, 15,000 infants lose their lives in Iran. That is, for every 1000 births, there are ten Iranian infants who die.”
He also stressed, “Every year, some 300 mothers die in Iran.”
Iraj Khosro Nia, head of the Association of Internal Medicine, also said, “A considerable number of infant deaths take place in the deprived districts and villages of because health clinics are hardly found in these areas and most deliveries are done by local midwives.”
