In a 16-point decree issued on September 3, 2016, the mullahs’ supreme leader Ali Khamenei set the general outlines of the Iranian regime’s Family Policy for all government organs.
The decree lays emphasis on promotion of women’s childbearing and housekeeping roles.
Khamenei was also explicit on marginalization of women. He called for “formation of a broad-based nationwide movement to promote and facilitate marriage.” (State-run Tasnim news agency – September 3, 2016)
It should be recalled that women’s political participation in Iran is only 3 per cent, their economic participation is 12 per cent, women’s unemployment rate is 87 per cent and the legal age of marriage for women is 13 while fathers can force their daughters into marriage even at younger age.
