“The face of poverty has become feminine,” said director of the state-run Assistance Committee (charity) in Shiraz, adding, “This development is a challenge that needs to be examined.”
Mer’at Rassuli told reporters, “Today, more than 64 per cent of impoverished families under cover of our Assistance Committee are women head of household.”
Rassuli added, “Of the total 18,400 women head of households covered by the Assistance Committee, 48 per cent are women whose husbands have been deceased, 17 per cent are women who are divorced and two per cent are women whose care-taker is in prison.”
Presently, there are 450 impoverished families living in the Holy Shrine of Shahcheragh in Shiraz who sleep hungry most of the nights.
