The latest statistics posted by the Iran Census Organization show that from 2004 to 2014, nearly 420,000 Iranian girls under the age of 15 have been married.
Two days ago, Majid Arjmandi, head of the Social Emergency body in Iran said during the past years, 360 girls under the age of 14 had been married, with ten cases of girls under the age of 10.
“Marriages and divorces amongst children increased 45% in Iran from 2005 to 2010,” says child rights activist Farshid Yazdani.
Figures in 2010 show that Iran had 37,000 divorced women and widows ranging from the ages of 10 to 18, he added. Yazdani said economic poverty is the main reason why families give children between the age of 10 and 15 for marriage.
