Merete Riisager – Chair of women’s committee of the Danish parliament
Women of camp Liberty, you have our eyes upon you and you have our support.
It is a great honor for me to be here joining all these men and women to continue struggle for human rights, democracy and personal freedom of Iranian women. I cannot even begin to understand the suffering of Iranian women and the bravery of men and women living in camp Ashraf and liberty.
I don’t know what it is like not to feel safe. I haven’t tried not to have freedom of speech and I never experienced what it feels like being deprived from your most fundamental rights as a human being. The fight for democracy, equality of gender, and freedom of speech and against religious fundamentalism is a continuous one.
Often when the rights of women are violated in the name of fundamentalist Islam, the oppressor would say it happens in order to secure honor. But I say that those who oppress women and take away their hopes and dignity are indeed men without honor.
Women of camp Liberty, you have our eyes upon you and you have our support. I will bring with me our share of responsibility of your safety back to Danish parliament and I will stress the need of getting you out of Liberty back to Ashraf as quick as possible.
