Denial of medical treatment to torture Zahra Safaei in Qarchak Prison

Denial of medical treatment to torture Zahra Safaei in Qarchak Prison

November 18, 2021
in Women's News

The Qarchak Prison authorities refuse to provide medical treatment to torture Zahra Safaei. Political prisoner Zahra Safaei suffers from a toothache while in detention in the notorious Qarchak Prison. Prison authorities have turned down her request to visit a dentist outside the prison at her own expense. The prison’s clinic has not provided her with any medical treatment.

Ms. Safaei had earlier had a heart stroke. She underwent heart surgery after many hindrances by the authorities of Qarchak Prison. Her dire health conditions make her incapable of enduring imprisonment. However, the warden of Qarchak Prison, Soghra Khodadadi, has deprived her of medical treatment to double the pressure on her.

On August 24, inmates took Zahra Safaei to the health center in critical condition. But the clinic officials said there was no problem. They gave her some painkillers and sent her back to the ward.

On August 27, when a cardiologist happened to be in prison, he took an electrocardiogram from Zahra Safaei and diagnosed her with a heart attack. He said that she needed to be transferred to the hospital immediately. Nevertheless, it took four days for the authorities in Qarchak to send her to a hospital.

Mrs. Safaei was transferred to the hospital on August 31, 2021. In the hospital, her hands and feet were chained to the bed. Therefore, she refused to stay in the hospital and was sent to prison without treatment.

Security forces arrested Zahra Safaei in Tehran on February 24, 2020. They also arrested her daughter, Parastoo Mo’ini. They were subsequently transferred to the Intelligence Ministry’s detention center (Ward 209 of Evin Prison). Zahra Safaei and Parastoo Mo’ini were transferred to Qarchak Prison in early March 2020.

On June 28, 2020, Zahra Safaei was temporarily released from Qarchak Prison, until the end of her trial, on bail of 300 million Tomans. But she was rearrested on July 26, 2020, when she went to the Prosecutor’s Office of Evin Prison to review her case and that of her daughter. On July 27, 2020, she was transferred to Qarchak Prison.

Political prisoner Zahra Safaei, 58, suffered a heart stroke on October 27, 2020, after being harassed and intimidated by prison authorities.

The lives of political prisoners in Qarchak Prison are in danger.

ABOUT US

NCRI Women Committee

We work extensively with Iranian women outside the country and maintain a permanent contact with women inside Iran. The Women’s Committee is actively involved with many women’s rights organizations and NGO’s and the Iranian diaspora.
The committee is a major source of much of the information received from inside Iran with regards to women. Attending UN Human Rights Council meetings and other international or regional conferences on women’s issues and engaging in a relentless battle against the Iranian regime’s misogyny are part of the activities of members and associates of the committee.
