Mowlud Safaei has been transferred to the women’s ward of Evin Prison to serve a 3-year sentence.
On Tuesday, July 30, 2024, Mowlud Safaei was arrested following a raid by security forces on her home. She was subsequently transferred to the women’s ward of Evin Prison to begin her 3-year prison term.
Born in 1960, Mowlud Safaei is from Tehran, married, and a mother of several children.
Previously, she was arrested on June 16, 2021, during a wave of detentions targeting supporters of the opposition People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK). She was then taken to Ward 209 of Evin Prison and was later released from Qarchak Prison on bail.
The Revolutionary Court sentenced her to one year in prison for “propaganda activities against the state” and 3 years in prison for “assembly and collusion against the state,” with the 3-year sentence being enforceable.
In 2012, Branch 15 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court also sentenced her to 5 years in prison and 5 years of compulsory residence in Semnan.
Mowlud Safaei, aged 64, is the sister of Zahra Safaei, a political prisoner currently held in Evin Prison. Mowlud Safaei has a history of previous arrests and convictions due to her peaceful activism.
Zahra Safaei, born in 1962, was imprisoned during the 1980s. Her father, Hassan Ali Safaei, known as “Haji Safaei,” was a prominent businessman in Tehran who was executed in 1981 for supporting the PMOI/MEK. Zahra Safaei’s husband was also executed in 1984.
