Farangis Mazloum jailed in Evin – Due to pressures from the Intelligence Ministry, Farangis Mazloum has been transferred to Evin Prison to serve her sentence.
Farangis Mazloum is the mother of former political prisoner Soheil Arabi.
Mrs. Farangis Mazloum suffers from severe health problems, including a heart condition and severe leg pain. She also suffered a brain stroke recently.
She has been diagnosed unfit to spend time in prison due to her health conditions. Nevertheless, she was summoned to the Implementation of Verdicts Unit of the Evin Prosecutor’s Office on August 2, 2022, and taken to Evin Prison to serve her time in prison.
An informed source said, “Farangis Mazloum had been summoned before her stroke. They said she must report to the forensics. Then the forensics office said she suffered from a heart problem, a brain stroke, an injured leg, and impaired vision. So it is not so important to implement justice!”
However, the Intelligence Ministry ordered this ailing mother’s imprisonment and called for her prison sentence implementation.
Mrs. Mazloum has suffered a brain stroke since February 2022. However, the Intelligence Ministry continued to pressure her to go to prison.
Farangis Mazloum cannot walk properly and must undergo surgery.
Ali Sharifzadeh, her lawyer, said, “Farangis Mazloum was transferred to the Evin Prison despite the forensic medicine’s view that she should enjoy a series of medical care during her time in prison. Since such facilities and care are not available in prison, the authorities should have refused to accept her. The responsibility for my client’s health rests with them.”
The Coronavirus outbreak in the women’s ward of Evin Prison
The news broke out on August 3, 2022, that a group of political prisoners in the women’s ward of Evin Prison had contracted the Coronavirus. Farangis Mazloum and Forough Taghipour are among those infected.
An informed source said, “The number of prisoners transferred from Qarchak Prison to Evin has increased from 14 to 18. The total number of women detained in the women’s ward of Evin is 60, without taking into account the ones on leave. Overcrowding is the reason the wave of the Coronavirus has spread in the women’s ward of Evin.”
According to the source, the number of detainees in the women’s ward has increased recently. New detainees from wards 209, 1A, and outside have been admitted to the ward to serve their sentence. Farangis Mazloum’s condition is very critical.”
Another prisoner who has contracted the Coronavirus is Forough Taghipour. Dozens of other prisoners also have symptoms of the disease.
Despite the worrying conditions of the detainees in the women’s ward, the Evin Prison authorities do not provide care and medicines to those infected.
