She is in poor condition due to lack of medical care
Political prisoner and human rights activist Ms. Nargess Mohammadi remains medically uncared for despite her deteriorating conditions. Yesterday, following eight hours of muscle paralysis, she was transferred to a hospital outside prison. However, despite the insistence of the physicians that she needs medical care, she was returned back to Evin Prison while partially unconscious.
Ms. Mohammadi who is a mother of two, was transferred to prison on May 5 after she was illegally arrested by intelligence agents at her home without a judicial warrant and subsequently transferred to Evin Prison. In order to put pressure on this political prisoner, all her medicine was taken away from her upon her transfer to her ward and she has been deprived of her medicine ever since by regime’s henchmen. Her expected trial on July 6 was not convened for unknown reasons.
Ms. Mohammadi was first arrested in June 2010 on charge of “assembly and collaboration against national security” and “propaganda against the system” and was condemned to six years in prison. However, due to torture and the dire condition of regime’s prisons, she developed a nervous ailment and muscles paralysis during her interrogations. Subsequently she was released with a heavy bail because of her deteriorating condition in a decree that stated she “could not bear her sentence”.
Ms. Mohammadi has been active in praising families of political prisoners, participation and speaking in the ceremony to honor Mr. Sattar Beheshti, the laborer and blogger martyred under torture, protesting against splashing of acid on women, working to halt executions, and defending religious and ethnic minority prisoners. Her activities have enraged the religious fascism ruling Iran.
It is said that following Ms. Mohammadi’s opposition to the execution of a number of Sunni prisoners and her call for a fair judicial process for them, the ludicrous charge of “cooperation with ISIS” has been added to her charges. There is a letter from the intelligence ministry in her file that requests “the highest punishment for Nargess Mohammadi because she is not remorseful”. Two head henchmen of Evin by the names of Nassiripour and Hamidi have threatened that due to the protests in her support, her sentence will be harsh.
Ms. Sarvnaz Chitsaz, Chair of Women’s Committee of the National Council of Resistance of Iran, once again urged the international human rights institutions and Mr. Ahmed Shaheed, UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Iran, as well as women’s rights bodies, to condemn the arbitrary arrests by the Iranian regime and to take effective measures to secure the release of Ms. Nargess Mohammadi and other female political prisoners.
