Four young women, 18 and under, commit suicide in NW Iranian cities

September 2, 2019
in Women's News

Four young women, 18 and under, committed suicide in the cities of Piranshahr, Khoy, and Saqqez, all in northwestern Iran.

One of the four young women was Elham Mehri Delavan, 16, who shot herself in Delavan village near Piranshahr, due to family dispute, on Thursday, August 29, 2019. The young woman was married an addicted man, whose first wife had also hanged herself 12 years ago. The husband’s addiction is considered to be the main cause of this suicide by Elham.

Another of the four young women was Leila Mahmoudlou, 16, who set fire to herself and ended her own life on Tuesday, August 27, 2019, in the city of Ghatour, in the county of Khoy.

On the same day, Shadi Islami, 18, hanged herself in the village of Khapoureh near Saqqez.

The last of the four young women was 15. Matin Kani Zardi took her own life by hanging on August 24, 2019, in Bazargan village of Piranshahr, due to family disputes.

In another tragic development, a young mother, Mania Derikvand, her daughter, Zoha Moussavi, and her son, Reza Moussavi, were murdered by her unemployed husband on August 26, 2019, in Khorramabad, capital of the western province of Lorestan. Mania Derikvand was the only breadwinner of her family, but extreme poverty had aggravated their problems.

Khorramabad was one of the cities hit by flash floods in spring and badly inflicted by damages. In the absence of any form of government support, many families have failed to reorganize their lives.

While some 90 percent of Iranian families live under the poverty line, and omnipresent poverty has led to various social crimes and ills, the clerical regime spends millions of dollars every year for domestic suppression and for enforcement of the compulsory veil on women. On the other hand, the regime spends exorbitant sums of money to pay for the expenses of the Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and its agents and proxies in Syrian, Iraq, Lebanon, Yemen, and other places.

ABOUT US

NCRI Women Committee

We work extensively with Iranian women outside the country and maintain a permanent contact with women inside Iran. The Women’s Committee is actively involved with many women’s rights organizations and NGO’s and the Iranian diaspora.
The committee is a major source of much of the information received from inside Iran with regards to women. Attending UN Human Rights Council meetings and other international or regional conferences on women’s issues and engaging in a relentless battle against the Iranian regime’s misogyny are part of the activities of members and associates of the committee.
