Reports indicate a significant deterioration in the physical condition of Massoumeh Yavari, a political prisoner held in Golpayegan Prison, who continues to be denied access to urgently needed specialized medical treatment. Sources close to her family warn that the continuation of this situation may lead to serious and irreversible consequences for her health.
Incomplete Medical Treatment in Golpayegan Prison
Massoumeh Yavari’s medical treatment has remained unfinished following a surgical procedure on her hand. She underwent surgery in late February of last year; however, despite posting a substantial bail and while still in recovery, her medical leave was abruptly revoked, and she was returned to Golpayegan Prison.
Following her return to prison, the surgical site became infected. Despite experiencing a high fever and worsening physical condition, prison authorities have refused to transfer her to external medical facilities. As a result, her treatment has been left incomplete.
Lack of Medical Facilities and Worsening Condition
The absence of adequate specialized medical facilities in Golpayegan Prison has further exacerbated her condition. Medical professionals had previously emphasized the necessity of continued post-operative care, but the lack of access to such services has led to a gradual decline in her health.
Underlying Health Conditions and Urgent Need for Specialized Care
In addition to the infection resulting from surgery, Yavari suffers from multiple underlying health conditions. These include heart disease, vascular blockage, and severe hypothyroidism. She also has a history of lumbar disc surgery. Given her overall medical condition, she requires continuous and specialized medical supervision.
Arrest, Sentencing, and Growing Concerns Over Her Health
Massoumeh Yavari was arrested on September 4, 2023, by agents of the Ministry of Intelligence at her private residence. The arrest was accompanied by a search of her home and the confiscation of personal belongings belonging to her and her family. Her case was reviewed on December 5 of the same year by the Revolutionary Court of Golpayegan, where she was ultimately sentenced to 13 years in prison. According to the ruling, she received seven years for “destruction of public property,” five years for “membership in People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran,” and one year for “propaganda against the state.”
Massoumeh Yavari, born in 1978, is a mother of two and has previously faced arrest and imprisonment
Amid the continued denial of adequate medical care, concerns about her health are intensifying. Sources close to her family warn that her continued detention without proper treatment could lead to further deterioration and serious complications. Her family and supporters are calling for her immediate transfer to external medical facilities and the completion of her treatment.
